The most recent fighting in Somalia is another in a series of violent power struggles plaguing the Horn of Africa country, and one which threatens to spread beyond its borders. The most recent chapter in the country? often violent history saw Somali government forces and Ethiopian troops acting in support of the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) overwhelm militias loyal to the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC). In June 2006 the Islamists had wrested control of large swaths of the country from warlords who had been the key power brokers in a country without a stable government since 1991.
